A one-day complete “nuts and bolts” guide to grant proposal development and management of critical proposal development processes. Participants will develop a detailed outline of a full grant proposal and develop logical and compelling narrative and spreadsheets in the challenging sections of needs assessments, objectives, evaluation and budget. Participants will also develop strategies for researching, cultivating, communicating, and building partnerships with foundation, corporation, and government funders.

Nonprofit organizations are different than businesses and government; not better or worse, but different. These differences should not be glossed over as you explore whether the creation of a nonprofit is the best way to achieve the goals or purposes you seek to achieve. You should understand what it means to be a nonprofit and how that differs from being a for-profit before you start the paperwork process.

You can complete the entire process yourself if you are prepared to go through the learning curve or engage the services of someone with expertise in forming, leading, managing and governing nonprofits. While it may be useful to engage the services of a lawyer for complicated situations, the average experience may not require a lawyer - just someone with solid experience in the nonprofit sector.(more)

Workshop participants will receive a packet of “how-to” sheets with outlines of key steps in each of the core processes. A sheet with links to hardware and software discussed in the course will be included.

Organizations are always looking for creative ways to market themselves to new leaders and donors. With the ease of digital cameras and digital editing programs, nonprofits can efficiently produce their own PSA’s “in-house.”

In this workshop, organizations will learn how to conceptualize and produce a Public Service Announcement (PSA) in length ranging from 28 seconds to 5 minutes. The workshop will offer an orientation to:

Outlining concepts of the piece onto “storyboards”

Using digital still and video cameras

Using free or low-cost software to edit picture, voice, sound, and text

Using software to prepare the PSA for distribution via webcast, or, onto CD-ROM disks

Gaining consents and permissions for use of media and people

Using web-based media such as YouTube as a presentation platforms

Other ideas for producing media such as capturing life histories and outcome testimonies for citizens served

The workshop will be facilitated by Jeff Cohen, local consultant, educator, and educational video producer.

We encore this program for a fifth time given the phenomenal response to the first four series in which more than 100 nonprofit professionals participated.

This is a program designed for managers and executives who want to learn the skills and knowledge needed to lead exceptional teams of individuals into the 21^st Century. Don’t take this program unless you are prepared to move beyond accepted management practices. This is an Effective Leadership program that will turn some of your beliefs regarding management upside down. This program is not about the science of management; it is about the Art of Leadership. Again, don’t take this course unless you are willing to look at management and leadership from an entirely new perspective.

NOTE: The Art of Leadership in seven weekly sessions. Each week builds upon the knowledge and discussion of the previous week making attendance critical.

Part One – Weeks 1-4

Part One covers the critical concepts for creating and leading exceptional teams. It is the Effective Leader who is able to take a group of normal people, and create a diverse team of exceptional individuals. This is done through the effective practice of the simple, elegant principles that make up the Art of Leadership. This is the dichotomy: while the principles are simple and elegant, they are extremely difficult to implement. This is because they often seem counter to accepted management practices. Part One will show you where management is wrong and leadership is right. And, it is leadership that is needed in the 21^st Century … are you ready?

Part Two – Weeks 5-7

Part Two covers areas of leadership that are not addressed in any other management or leadership program that we are aware of. These secrets include: the importance of storytelling to changing the attitudes and beliefs of team members, the power of intuition and insight, the potential in surprises (good and bad), and the necessity of innovation and change. Finally, Part Two brings it all together by teaching the knowledge and skills needed for effective negotiation. Don’t think you know all there is to know about negotiation; you will be asked to see this critical management issue from an entirely new perspective … the perspective of the Effective Leader.
